The Tip Formula
Tip amount
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage, divided by 100.
Tip = (Bill × Tip%) ÷ 100
Total
The total is the bill plus the tip.

Split between N people
If the bill is split, the total is divided by the number of people. The tip is also divided separately, so you can see how much of each person's share goes to the tip.
Per person = Total ÷ Split
Rounding up
If you enable the round-up option, the total is increased to the nearest whole currency unit. The extra amount is added to the tip, so the tip percentage effectively rises. On a $47.50 bill at 15%, the tip is $7.13 and the total is $54.63. Rounded up, the total becomes $55.00 and the tip becomes $7.50 — an effective tip of 15.79%.
Effective tip percentage
When rounding up, the tip percentage you entered is no longer exact. The calculator shows the real percentage that the rounded tip represents. Useful when you want to keep the tip generous without going overboard.

How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurants. In the UK and Europe, 10% is common or service is already included. Always check whether a service charge is already on the bill.
How do I split the tip between people?
Enter the number of people in the split field. The calculator shows each person's share of the total, including tip.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable. Most people tip on the post-tax total, but tipping on the pre-tax amount is also common and considered perfectly reasonable.
What is rounding up?
Rounding up increases the total to the nearest whole currency unit. On a $47.50 bill, rounding up makes it $48.00. The extra amount goes to the tip.
Do I tip on takeaway or delivery?
For takeaway, tipping is optional. For delivery, 10–15% is common in the US and generous in most other countries. Delivery drivers often rely on tips more than restaurant staff.
Is service included?
In many European and UK restaurants, a discretionary service charge of 10–12.5% is already added. Check the bill before adding an extra tip.
