How It Works

Conversion Logic

Multiplicative units

Length, weight, volume and speed convert by multiplying the input by a fixed factor to reach the base unit, then dividing by another factor to reach the target unit. Every conversion in this calculator uses internationally standard factors.

Temperature

Temperature is different — it uses offsets, not just ratios. The formulas are:

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

K = °C + 273.15

US vs metric units

Units marked US in the conversion table are predominantly used in the United States. The others are metric or international. Both are exact — the US fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart and gallon differ from their British imperial counterparts, so this calculator uses the US standards for those units.

Precision and rounding

Conversions are shown to a sensible number of decimal places. Where a value would be unwieldy (extremely small or large), scientific notation is used. The underlying value keeps full precision in the calculation.
