How Text is Counted
Words
The text is split on whitespace. Each token is then stripped of surrounding punctuation. Hyphenated words such as well-known count as one word. Numbers count as words. Emoji and symbols alone do not.
Characters
Two counts are shown: characters (every character including spaces and line breaks) and characters without spaces. Twitter and similar platforms count the first value. Some publishers count the second.
Sentences and paragraphs
Sentences are split on ., ! and ?. Paragraphs are split on blank lines. A single newline counts as a line, not a paragraph.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time assumes an average adult speed of 225 words per minute. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, the pace of clear narration or a presentation.
Keywords
Words shorter than four characters and common stop words (the, and, but, etc.) are excluded. The remaining words are sorted by frequency, and the top eight are shown. The top keyword density is that keyword's share of total words.
